We at Studio74 are pleased to announce that we will be presenting the Book Launch and Photography Exhibition for russian photographer Alex Partola.

Having been part of a number of group exhibitions over the last twelve months in Russia, this will be the first European and solo exhibition for this young but perceptive photographer. Here is your opportunity to see him ‘open the curtain’ on the reality of Russia’s underground graffiti art world. The exhibition will include 15 photographs from Partola’s book "Ghost in the Machine".

“Ghost is the soul or spirit it can appear translucent or as barely visible wispy shapes, almost invisible to the naked eye” This sentence resonates truth in more ways than one when it comes to Alex Partola’s new book. Through his photography he manages to capture the plight of a misunderstood community that craves the freedom of artistic expression while seeking no personal recognition. The artists he photographs are shadows not only in the dark, but also to the art community that so adamantly rejects their premise. Lords of the visual city backyards, they are the creators of "giant galleries" on trains. They pursue the same objectives as the artists of the world: to be heard, to tell the world about themselves and create something that would seem like a breath of fresh air for an individual who is still attempting to find his or her way in the art world. Partola allows you to enter this world of illegality and suppression in a way that many will never encounter again in their lifetimes. Even the title ‘Ghost in the Machine’, which is hackers language for ‘the virus is loaded’ perpetuates this sense of wrongdoing that is so well represented in his book.
