Painterly abstraction (Abstract-Expressionism) takes the viewer behind the illusions of paint. Actions are revealed by the visible tracks of the painter’s marks, recording the artist at work.
The artist is the subject, expressing emotion through gesture, on a path unobstructed by caution. At its best, this genre captures the liveliest and brightest moments of improvisation.

‘Sketches of Time’ brings together abstract painters and sculptors from China, Sweden, USA and UK.

Anders Knutsson from Sweden is a one of the most highly regarded minimalist monochrome painters of his generation, with work in Museums across the world.

Vivien Zhang, originally from China, is currently studying for an MA at the Royal College of Art. Her paintings use a specific set of motifs, which disarticulate themselves to create visual chaos.

Karen Silve, from Oregon, is a lyrical, purely abstract painter whose work is in numerous collections across the USA.

Mark Russell paints in Cornwall and Dorset. His highly humorous approach to life is expressed through his paintings.

Rufus Knight-Webb has created a series of ‘techno-expressionist’ paintings, describing the sprawling structures and the restlessness of city life. His work is in many prestigious collections.

Lesley Hilling creates abstract wooden sculptures made from piano parts, driftwood and other recycled material, which are a response to her experience of urban life.
