Surrey Opera brings a new fully staged production with orchestra of George Lloyd’s first opera, IERNIN, in this his Centenary year. Written when the Cornish composer was still in his teens, Iernin is based on a Celtic story inspired by the Nine Maidens stone circle near Penzance. When Iernin, one of the stone maidens, returns to life, conflict arises as she falls in love with a young nobleman and Cornish independence is threatened. Lloyd’s music dramatically evokes the mystical world of Iernin as well as the very human struggle between love and loyalty versus desire.
