This film tells the story of couple Ghazal and Mehran whose relationship and livlihood becomes intensely complicated by her mental breakdown after her entire family die during a fatal car accident with her as driver. This sets up 'The Shallow Yellow Sky' as a powerful investigation into dealing with mental illness of loved ones, as we are shown in stages Mehran compassionately using his imagination to humour his wife, his confusion, anger and fear. No longer able to see natural beauty or engage with reality without fear, Ghazal seeks to protect a frozen image of a time before the crash—at the peak of beauty where she is reminded of the poem The Shallow Yellow Sky. Mehran meanwhile only sees exhaustive destruction. Thus intertwined within the narrative, mise-en-scène is stunningly used to draw poetic parallels between nature and the couples depleting relationship as well as Ghazal's psychological state. A gripping and sensitive piece of New Wave Iranian Cinema.
