Fine Art dealers Gladwell & Patterson, located on Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge, are delighted to announce their forthcoming exhibition, from Wednesday 13 – Tuesday 19 November, showcasing the latest works from leading landscape artist Peter Symonds.

Featuring about fifty oil paintings and taking inspiration from his passion for the great outdoors, the exhibition of Peter’s work is a celebration of mountain, coastal, cliff and estuary scenes predominantly from the British Isles, but also further afield from countries such as Oman and Morocco.

Peter’s paintings are born out of an urge to capture the drama of remote and wild landscapes throughout the varied seasons and weather conditions, for which Britain is so renowned. His passion for hiking and camping in the British wilderness and beyond, perfectly complements his desire to find compositions that are both original and captivating.

A chart detailing the peaks of Scotland hangs in his Surrey studio and when not painting, Peter is often plotting his next expedition. Peter explains how he came to paint a moody composition set in the Fisherfield Forest whilst on a hike in the North West of Scotland, arguably one of the remotest areas in the Highlands.

‘I had already enjoyed several backpacking trips into Fisherfield, to climb the mountains there, but was keen to approach it this time from the coast to the north-west. The map showed a track hugging the banks of the Gruinard River, which reaches deep into this wild area, and I knew this could make a great foreground to the mountains beyond. With the sun making a timely appearance, as the low cloud lifted from the mountain tops, I was thrilled to get the composition that I had so anticipated.’

The jagged cliffs and white beaches of Devon and Cornwall also feature prominently in the exhibition. A vibrant painting of South Sands, Salcombe captured in high summer, featuring its indented coastline and glistening sea, whilst a family explores its sands, will resonate with anyone who has embraced the South West as a holiday destination or second home.

Peter’s love of arid North African landscapes and his continuing love for the mountains, provides an international flavour to the exhibition. There are a series of works from Morocco featuring landscapes from the Central High Atlas, the Toubkhal massif and Jebel Sahro mountain ranges.
