Opening to huge success in October 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s the Phantom of the Opera remains today as one of the longest running musicals in London. The Phantom of the Opera is officially the most successful entertainment of the twentieth century- taking more money than E.T., Titanic and Star Wars- over £2,000,000,000 worldwide. More than one hundred million people have seen the musical in more than twenty different countries. The Original Cast Recording was the first in British history to enter the music charts at number one. When touring the show takes up twenty-seven articulated Lorries. The Phantoms make-up takes more than two hours to apply and half an hour to remove. Every show requires 125 members of cast, crew and orchestra to perform and an intricate replica of the Paris Opera House chandelier is used in each performance.

The story was adapted from the novel by Gaston Leroux and revolves around a beautiful Opera singer and a young composer- shamed by his distorted appearance. It is a tragic love story and an emotional and absorbing tale. The Phantom falls in love with the young singer and takes it upon himself to go to any lengths to further her career- including murder. In its seventeen year run the production has become a well polished and seamless piece with a superbly talented cast. The lead roles were famously played by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman- who successfully took the show to Broadway in 1988.

The song list from this production features such unforgettable tracks as ‘The Music of the Night’, ‘Masquerade’ and ‘As if we Never Said Goodbye’.
