A new generation of leaders is emerging, and many are determined to strengthen universities, research centres and increase knowledge collaboration with the rest of the world. This is the other Arab revolution taking place, incrementally, and largely away of the media glare. Ehsan Masood is a science writer, journalist and broadcaster. He is the editor of Research Fortnight and teaches international science policy at Imperial College London. His most recent book is called Science and Islam: A History. Rim Turkmani is a Syrian-born astrophysicist at Imperial College London and Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow of the Royal Society.
