ditto is thrilled to announce Amy Sharrock as the guest speaker for our upcoming Campfire on Thursday, 20th February. Amy is one of the most interesting, innovative and interdisciplinary artists in the UK today. Her journey of creativity, experimentation and performance provides us with the perfect excuse to welcome friends old, new and not-yet-met to our monthly storytelling event.

Amy has worked across mediums, but she is perhaps best known for her work combining live art with sculpture. In 2012 she invited a group of over-60s, a Depression Alliance group and school children to collaborate with her in A Time to Fall, deliberately falling to explore losing control, the liberation of inelegance, the risk of pain and the potential of flying (if just for a moment). Amy’s method of inviting others to work alongside her, combined with the bravery and creativity of their responses, produces new avenues for exploration and fantastic visions within the everyday.

Much of her work examines London’s relationship with water. She is best known for 2007’s SWIM, where she invited 50 people to cross London via water on 12th July 2007, from Tooting Bec Lido to Hampstead Heath Pond. In 2009 she toured drift around England, taking people one by one to drift across swimming pools in an inflatable boat. In 2011 Amy led London is a River City, a number of public walks tracing London’s underground rivers. In 2009 she toured drift around England, taking people one by one to drift across swimming pools in an inflatable boat. She is currently curating Museum of Water, a collection of publicly donated water, and promoting Swim the Thames.

Amy’s work appears in the Live Art Almanac and Artsadmin 30. It has also attracted bursaries and grants from Artsadmin, DIY and Awards for All. She has just been awarded an a-n New Collaborations bursary to continue her research into falling with choreographer Emilyn Claid, and her article The Anatomy of Falling will be published in Performance Research later this year.

Amy invites her audience to undertake journeys where their own experience, communication and expression are a vital part of the work, crafted by her own sense of humour, joy and risk. Her own journey is sure to make for an entertaining and challenging story.

To compliment her talk, Amy will be sharing her inspirations and artistic ambitions by displaying several interactive art pieces, including “Keeping Up”, a selection of shoes, stilts and other assorted footwear for guests to totter around on.

We would be very grateful if you could help us promote the event through social media channels or passing the details on via your contacts – it’s going to be a night you won’t forget.

Join us for a fantastic night of storytelling, artistry and entertainment at 7pm, Thursday 20th February, at ditto’s studio:

RSVP: [email protected]

The ditto doors will be displaying photos from Amy’s live works, and inviting you to take part in artworks including Keeping Up: a selection of shoes, such as the Vivienne Westwood platforms, stilts and assorted other footwear, that will be available to teeter and totter around on. Amy will also bring The Umbrellables and be attempting a new work Cloud Base – all of which the audience will be invited to join in with.
