The Santa Maria Foundation supports orphaned or abandoned young girls and those deemed to be at “high risk” in Colombia. Through an alliance with the Family Wellbeing Institute and at its own school, the young girls are provided with an education that will enable them to develop into inspirational and active members of society. The school was set up to provide a centre of educational excellence, using music and languages both as a therapy to address the traumas of their past but also to provide them with opportunities they would never otherwise have, including the formal education that would enable them to go into university. Through its education, SMF provides these girls with a high level of security, development and skills that would have a direct impact in the alleviation of poverty in Colombia in the long term. The approach is unique and is currently being considered by the British Council as a model that may be replicated by other establishments. 100% of all the monies raised by Santa Maria go towards the benefit of the girls and do not pay for any administration costs or salaries.
