Hungarian violinist Lajos Sarkozi first performed at the 606 Club as part of the Budapest-based East Gipsy Band and he made such an impression that we have now invited him back several times to perform here under his own name. A player who has won numerous awards around Europe, including the Zathureczky Ede National Violin Competition in Hungary and the International Telemann Violin Competition in Poland, he is a fiery and passionate performer, who plays with the flair and abandon characteristic of the Romani tradition. The music is a brilliant mix of classic jazz, Hot Club/Stephane Grappelli-influenced Manouche and Hungarian Gypsy music and when performed with Lajos’s absolutely stunning technique is quite breathtaking. Tonight he will be working with a high class UK rhythm section of Tim Lapthorn-piano, Mark Lewandowski-bass and Gene Calderazzo-drums - quite a pairing. This is a rare opportunity to hear this absolutely brilliant musician.
“Whip-sharp runs, caressing glissandos, and vicious pizzicato notes enlivened his assured and elegant line” San Francisco Classical Voice
