Come along to the first in a Calvert 22 series of pop-up events this autumn and meet renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley at the launch of his latest book Landscapes of Communism: A History through Buildings (Allen Lane), an insightful analysis of the built legacy of the Soviet Union and socialist eastern Europe.

In conversation with Dr Jamie Rann, Hatherley will discuss the past, present and future of Communist architecture, exploring the relationship between power and place, examining questions of how ideology shapes architecture and vice-versa.

The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the author and book signing.

'In the craven world of architectural criticism Hatherley is that rarest of things: a brave, incisive, elegant and erudite writer, whose books dissect the contemporary built environment to reveal the political fantasies and social realities it embodies'. Will Self

The event is free to attend, but booking is essential.

Owen Hatherley is the author of four books on British architecture, politics and pop culture as well as Across the Plaza, an e-book on public squares in post-communist Europe. He wrote his PhD thesis on Americanism in the Weimar Republic and the USSR. He lives mostly in Woolwich and sometimes in Warsaw.
