CIAD's Autumn’s exchange looks at the history of hairstyles and accessories within the African diaspora and how many meanings have been lost through contemporary usage. We will be looking at:
• The historical and cultural meanings behind how and why certain hairstyles and accessories were worn.
• How particular cultures across the Diaspora have used hairstyles and adornments to send messages, as a means of remembrance or ancestral worship.
• Whether the cultural appropriation of particular styles is a problem or inevitable within the realms of creative expression.
The CIAD Exchange Lecture series is a two hour event, the first hour is dedicated to a presentation with Q&A followed by a networking and drinks reception.
