Award-winning crime writer Ian Rankin talks about one of his most celebrated Inspector Rebus novels

This November, Ian Rankin will publish his 21st Rebus novel. As we approach the 30th anniversary of one of crime fiction's most popular characters, the Guardian Book Club returns to Rebus’s eighth outing, Black and Blue.

Rankin's breakthrough novel, the book juggles four separate plotlines and blurs fiction and history to revive Glasgow's infamous ‘Bible John’, who murdered women he met at the Barrowlands Dance-hall in the 1960s but was never caught.

Rankin will talk to Guardian Book Club host John Mullan about the book and the enduring appeal of his curmudgeonly Edinburgh detective.

The event will be followed by a book signing.
