Decanter and WaterAid invite public to turn Wine into Water for world’s poorest at Christie’s auction

Some of the world’s best wines will be auctioned off at Christie’s next week in aid of international charity WaterAid as part of Decanter’s ‘Wine into Water’ initiative.

Decanter Magazine will auction off any unopened bottles of wine that have been entered into its World Wine Awards, with proceeds going to WaterAid, to help provide clean water and safe toilets for some of the world's poorest communities.

Members of the public are invited to join the eleventh annual auction at Christie’s, King Street, London from 10:30am on 10 November. An online auction will follow from 17 November – 1 December, with many bargains available for wine lovers.

Over the years, the wine auctions have raised more than £500,000 to help transform lives in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Sarah Kemp, Publishing Director at Decanter Magazine, said:

“The auction is an unprecedented chance for enthusiasts to get their hands on some of the best wines, which are not readily available on the high street while helping a great cause. We have some very special wines being auctioned off, including classic Bordeaux, Champagnes and Italian wines.

“Having visited WaterAid projects in Zambia, I’ve seen first-hand the difference that having safe water and good sanitation can make – these basic resources really do save lives. I’m so proud that Decanter magazine can continue to make a difference in some of the world’s poorest and most marginalised communities.”

Alice Woodland, Corporate Partnerships Executive at WaterAid, said:

“WaterAid is extremely grateful to Decanter and its readers for its ongoing support for our lifesaving work.

The partnership has grown over the years and with the top world wines on offer, the money has gone even further to support our vital projects in Africa, Asia and Central America. Just £15 can help provide one person with access to safe water, so the money from a bottle of wine really can go a long way.

“One in ten people around the world have no choice but to drink unsafe water, while one in three have nowhere safe to go to the toilet. This global crisis claims the lives of 900 children every single day, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we can ensure everyone everywhere has access to safe, clean water by 2030.”
