An exciting new installation opera by rising talent Dr Self, with performance artist Neyire Ashworth on clarinet. Hatshepsut, the female pharaoh, journeys through ancient Egypt in search of herbs and exotic animals. In Selfmademusic’s ritualistic performance installation, her Luxor reign is revived after centuries of repression. Her tomb becomes a cinematic object-based installation of throbbing, hip-hop soundscapes. Hatshepsut, played by the clarinetist/performance artist Neyire Ashworth, simultaneously manifests the spirit of Boudicca and Marilyn Monroe while a crumbling archeologist from Palmyra played by heldentenor Robert Christie unwraps Hatshepsut’s mummy despite encroaching war. Dr Self’s high energy composition is a fusion of all that you like about John Cage and Sting.
