The East London Eye exhibition is a unique photograhic record of Newham as it was in the 1960s. The photographs were taken by Steve Lewis, then a trainee photographer with the Newham Recorder. Steve Lewis became the “East London Eye” taking pictures that captured a typical East London day.

Steve Lewis then went on to a distinguished career in national newspapers and incredibly the photographs remained forgotten in his attic until he rediscoverd the orginal negatives two years ago.

The images that make up the exhibition have therefore remained unseen for many years and offer a fascinating glimpse of life in Newham as it was almost 50 years ago long before London 2012. Never before has such a fascinating survey of East London life during the 1960s been on display.

The exhibition graphically illustrates the gritty reality of life in Newham in the 1960’s in stark contrast to the flower power of swinging London. The East London Eye is a fascinating glimpse into a vanished world.

Steve Lewis will also be signing his book "London’s East End - A 1960’s Album" on the date of the exhibition launch, Friday 11 March.
