An outdoor exhibition of gargantuan proportions by Japanese sculptor Atsuo Okamoto (born Hiroshima, 1951). A consummate carver, his work not only celebrates the sensibilities of the stone carver but also transcends the conventions of stone sculpture to engage with issues of contemporary life and art making. He reflects on his own history as a child of Hiroshima while at the same time revealing a wit, charm and sense of humour.
Atsuo Okamoto says “Stone keeps huge memories inside, since the planet came into existence. I feel that stone is the most romantic and intellectual object on the earth.”
