Think the lowly park bench is just a handy spot to park your shopping and yourself on the long walk home from Sainsbury’s? Think again. Artist Kamala Katbamna says the park bench is the perfect place for conversation - particularly conversation about the emotional, physical and imaginative landscape.

Kamala has been cycling a bespoke ‘park bench’ through the shifting cityscape of the Elephant & Castle, inviting guests and passersby to join her in an exploration of the regeneration, poverty, decay and growth that mark London’s most famous roundabout. Created in the weeks leading up to the recent riots, the resulting ‘postcards’ and maps are an intriguing insight into a city on the brink of change.

The PARK BENCH exhibition launches with a private view on Thursday 1st September at pop-up gallery Unit 237/238 in the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre. Alongside the postcards and maps, the exhibition will also feature sound and film with writer Sebastian Groes; illustrations from RCA artist, Rebecca Davies; and music from Nigel of Bermondsey.

Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
