An ear-tickling delight for all lovers of 19th-century Italian bel canto, Jonathan Miller’s affectionately comic take on Donizetti’s bittersweet rural romance, set in and around a 1950s American diner, won all hearts at its 2010 ENO debut and now enjoys a return date with a fresh cast.
Dazzling soprano Sarah Tynan reprises her role as the adorable, Marilyn-styled Adina. Fast-rising tenor Ben Johnson (Kathleen Ferrier Award Winner 2008) and baritone Benedict Nelson (The Daily Telegraph’s ‘Best Newcomer’ of 2009) play the nerdy grease-monkey and the gum-chewing GI who both vie for her affections. Andrew Shore returns as the slick love potion salesman – a performance that earned him an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Opera.
