KATHAK MUGHLIA

‘Dance is everything, it is life.’

Fasih ur Rehman is a dancer who has strived throughout his career to bring the beauty of dance to others.
He is a man for whom dance is a lifeblood, the call to dance beating in his heart. Fasih Rehman is said to be the only male dancer in Pakistan and he has staunchly defended the classical art form in his home country in the face of opposition from governments, striving to keep Kathak alive and true to form.
He has over 30 years experience and understanding of the Kathak Artform.

Kathak is a compelling, storytelling form of dance depicting traditional myths and stories which are both Hindu and Muslim. Kathak is controlled and precise but also an energetic, lively form of dance. Kathak and Fasih represent a cultural dialogue and rich heritage from the North of India.

‘On stage, though, he shifts seamlessly between tandava and lasya, the masculine and feminine energies needed to portray a Kathak love song, tugging at his imaginary paramour’s plait one moment, gracefully sliding on bangles the next.’ Renuka Narayanan, Indian Express

Why should someone come and see him?

This is a rare opportunity to see one of the best international Kathak artists in the world who has informed the development of the art form for over 30 years. Fasih ur Rehman has recently moved to the UK and this performance at Watermans follows an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2006. For any lover or follower of dance this is a vital cog in the wider understanding, delivered by an artist whose skill is exemplary with his most notable performances including:

• The American Dance Festival
• Culture Centre for the Consulate General of Japan
• ARTFEST
• Rafi Peer Theatres Dance Festivals
• Royal Albert Hall
