Our Light: Voices of Women Fundraising Gala

The Shayler Foundation on 17 March 2012 will host its first annual International Women’s Day event at Arbeit Gallery. The event will serve as a launch for our Safe Birthing Project aimed at helping Ugandan women have a healthy pregnancy and delivery. The gala evening will include an art exhibit titled “Our Light: Voices of Women”, along with a silent auction, live music from DJ Nina, as well as food and cocktails.

The complications leading to a maternal death can occur without warning at any time during pregnancy and childbirth. And for every woman who dies in impoverished circumstances, approximately 20 more suffer injuries, infection and disabilities. Most maternal deaths can be prevented if births are attended by skilled health personnel – doctors, nurses and midwives – who are regularly supervised and have the proper equipment and supplies.
