THE COPLA MUSICAL:

Traditional Spanish Culture and Folklore Through Contemporary New Writing

The HisPanic Breakdown Company is proud to unveil the first Copla-inspired Musical in English Language. Copla songs are extremely relevant in the Spanish musical and theatrical history since 1930s-1940s, and have never been adapted nor seen the light abroad. The aim of The Copla Musical is to make this passionate genre accessible to an international audience in the form of a contemporary musical theatre piece.

In 1939, drag artist La Gitana escapes from Franco’s dictatorship in Spain to become a variety star in America with the help of her American lover. We will witness La Gitana’s struggle to merge her Spanish past into her American future and the challenges she will face to leave the war behind.

On 2nd, 3rd and 4th October, we will be presenting a work in progress of Act II as part of the Collisions Festival, at the Central School of Speech and Drama (Eton Avenue, London NW3 3HY). In this presentation of one hour long the original atmosphere of Copla will be recreated in a cabaret set-up where drinks will be served during the performance.

FREE ENTRY, limited capacity. Reservations at [email protected]

The HisPanic Breakdown is a young theatre company committed to develop and showcase original theatre work. Our artistic mission addresses the depiction of traditional culture and folklore through contemporary new writing.
