The most anticipated weekend of the racing season - the finale of the 2012 Dunlop MSA Touring Car Championship.
The British Touring Car Championship has been around since 1957 and hasn’t changed much over the years. The principle remains the same – standard road cars, competing against one another over a sprint distance road race.
The sport has moved on a bit, evolving safety features in line with the increased speed modern BTCC race cars can achieve and taking account of developments in safety equipment – you’ll notice the drivers head to toe in fireproof suits, a huge number of orange-clad marshals huddled at ‘posts’ around the circuit as well as fully equipped recovery vehicles for when things don’t quite go to plan on track!
The championship is contested over ten weekends at nine different race tracks and each weekend features three British Touring Car races. Sounds simple – the driver with the most points at the end of the season wins.
There are three other championships also up for grabs – the winning team, manufacturer and independent driver. Each championship has great significance for the winner giving them an enhanced platform from which to seek much needed sponsorship.
Contrary to popular belief, the British Touring Car Championship is contested for honour and whilst there is no overall purse, there are small cash prizes and an allocation of tyres for independent drivers and teams to fight for each weekend.
