The Battlefields Trust is proud to present this lecture, given by Charles Messenger, a renowned military historian.
The 8th (Service) Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers was raised in London in August 1914 as one of the earliest of Kitchener’s New Army battalions, and disbanded in February 1918. During its brief existence it fought with great distinction on the Somme in 1916, at Arras and then Cambrai in 1917. Besides many other awards, its members won two Victoria Crosses.
The Tower of London is the traditional home of the Royal Fusiliers and today’s Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and is to further honour this Band of Brothers in the month of Remembrance and as we approach the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.
