French genius playwright, Molière’s classic comedy The Miser is transported from 17th century France to modern day India in Tara Arts’ new stage adaptation Kanjoos (Hindi for ‘miser) - The Miser. The production is by the UK’s foremost South Asian theatre company, the critically acclaimed Tara Arts and TV funny-man Hardeep Singh Kohli (Celebrity Masterchef, The Wright Stuff and The Nearly Naked Chef).

In the money-mad maelstrom of modern India lurks Harjinder makhi-choos (‘flea-sucking miser’). He is a man obsessed with hoarding his wealth by adhering strictly to his interpretation of the principles of Gandhi – minimum dress and food, the principles of relentless self-sacrifice and raw frugality. Harjinder hates spending money with a passion, whether it be on his household or his children who themselves are desperate for marriage and obsessed with the Bollywood life-style of Mumbai. This classic farce is a comedy for our times. When the age of austerity is pitched firmly up against the ever-increasing desire to consume, sparks will fly.

Comedy, love, lust, greed, dance and magical Bollywood music are the ingredients that make this a must-see theatrical joy. Audiences are invited to sit under the Indian sun in a village just outside the great city of Mumbai whilst watching the drama unfold on stage.

Kanjoos – The Miser features some of the best in British South Asian acting talent including Antony Bunsee (Hollyoaks, My Family and Eastenders) who plays the flea-sucking miser, Harjinder. The production also features the beautiful vocals of Sohini Alam who with a band of live musicians perform classic and modern Bollywood songs.

Kanjoos – The Miser is not-to-be missed theatre for everyone but will particularly interest audiences who love comedy, witty adaptations of classic texts, Bollywood music and film.
