Carole Villain is pleased to announce the opening of her show 'Stepping out from Asphodel Meadows' at Studio 73 - Brixton Village, London.
Private view / screening 15 February 6.30 - 9.30 pm
“Stepping out from Asphodel Meadows” explores the film of memories, the burden of meaning, the infinity of layers the reality is made of.
It” is a show about something impossible, about rebellion, passion and the instinct of going somewhere anyway.
Asphodel meadows refer to Greek mythology, from the part of the underworld where normal people were sent after death. A meaningless eternity. People were condemned to wander in those sad, plain meadows. Nothing to do. No hope. Only brooding back on old memories for eternity. Greek mythology, as a collective memory, is a departure point for a critical approach to the meaning of memories and to the place of action and of image in contemporary society.
Is it really impossible to escape?
The show includes paintings, works on paper, lino prints, work on vintage and found objects.
A wall of the Studio 73 becomes a gallery of portraits mixing subjects and media to become a “map of memories”, real and invented.
On Friday evening, a special screening of her new video work will take place at the gallery.
