All In London Review

Gets my vote for an informal work lunch or as a place to start your evening out..

I know and frequent quite a few of the Davy’s wine bars. They are a little bit of London’s yesteryear. I have many fond memories especially of the one in Creed Lane near St Paul’s but The Bung Hole is right near one of my clients so I have been there for lunches, drinks after work and even office parties.

Upstairs is your typical bar – wooden tables and chairs. Fairly relaxed. Reasonable selection of wines. Rarely crowded.

Downstairs you enter the more familiar Davy’s environment – the saw dust floors, suitably cellar like brick walls and upturned barrels for resting your wine for those who prefer to stand while they drink.

There is also a large, spacious restaurant area – again, typically dark. But I like that there is a good space between tables, so you don’t have to listen to the people on the next table’s conversation.

The Manager and staff are really friendly, and you only have to go in a couple of times to be recognised and welcomed with recognition and a bit of a chat. Feels like home before you know it.

There are different menus for the restaurant and the bar, although they are happy to serve restaurant food in the bar area if you prefer. The bar food is simple but tasty food in good sized portions – ploughmans, salads, ham, cold salmon.

So this gets my vote for an informal work lunch or as a place to start your evening out. But like most City wine bars, during the week it can be a bit quiet in the evenings. But at least this Holborn branch doesn’t close up at 9pm as some of its sister establishments do in the City.
