The Mayfair Salon is now my favourite barbers - not least because it is a proper gentleman's barber, where men are men and haircuts are haircuts. The boss has the right hand chair, his straight man the left hand one. They seem to know (and greet) just about everyone that passes the shop. The clientele are a very smart and English lot, many seem to be regulars who work nearby, possibly private bankers and their ilk (all well out of my league), yet the prices (about £18 for a standard cut) are not at all bad for the very centre of Mayfair.
It opens early, catering for people on their way to the office, and while you wait there are today’s newspapers to read and Radio 4 to listen to. They do a very professional cut, during which you can either muse on the odd curios on the shelf in front of you or try and hold your own in a conversation (I’ve not yet succeeded). Visit more than once and they'll remember both you and how you have your hair. It’s that rare thing, a proper traditional service done well to fit in with a modern world.
The Mayfair Salon offer a general grooming service for men including traditional wet shaves.
