On two occasions I have paid £42 and £38 respectively to have two packages sent airmail to Canada from the Essex Road PO only to have them arrive 12 weeks and 14 weeks later having gone seamail. Today I was in the queue and got chatting to a lady who was sending a gift to a grandchild in Australia. She told me she must have mistakenly sent her last gift seamail because it took so long to arrive. In addition she said she hadn't realised how expensive seamail was and why would anyone chose it over airmail when there was so very little difference in the price. It sounds as if the same thing happened to her as happened to me. While I won't go as far as to accuse anyone of dishonesty, this is a tad too coincidental for it to be happenstance. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience (particularly the elderly as both myself and the lady I talked to are in that demographic). I hope someone will look into this. I now use a different PO to send parcels abroad.

So pleased this P.O. was saved from the axe - it is open earlier and for longer hours and has more staffing stations open than any Crown P.O. Staff are helpful and polite in my experience.
If you want a packet of crisps, try going to a Crown P.O. and see what they say! Good idea to treat the staff as you would like to be treated - they are just as human as you are.

Just an update from my last review 7 years ago:- The service is diabolical still, there are never any staff on the till apart from the grey hair who seems to get pleasure at customer frustration in regards to the time they are queuing! The icing on the cake is the sarcy comments!! Do you have to have an attitude to work in a PO? If you went in to buy crisps/drinks & a stamp you'd be refused purchase of the stamp if the PO part was open BUT there was a long queue! So a 5 minute task would end up being 15!! Why is there not a stamp machine on the wall outside like there used to be?? Would that be too hard to install?? The place should be shut down!!! It is sub poor, it's sub sub poor!! - 100

Rude, Condescending, Arrogant, slow, passively aggressive!!

Extremely rude staff. Have been thrown out for having my folded up Brompton bicycle with me - all 3 staff members felt the need to berate me. Was basically bullied. Many other instances of rude customer service towards me and witnessed many others towards elderly and somewhat slower customers.

i don't understand how people complain about queues , most of post office they have queues so deal with it and buying envelope as if you remember it's a franchised post office not a crown branch and in most of franchised branches you have to buy envelopes or bring your own envelope with you.

The last time i used this PO there was an entrance & an exit door, the shelf by the door was stocked with all the forms you'd need such as tax forms etc & there was a working stamp machine outside on the wall. Now there arn't any forms, the stamp machine is out of service, there's only one door & you have to queue up twice.Once to buy an envelope & again to deal with your mailing business. And one of the cashiers was eating his lunch whilst there was a queue. What a shoddy place it has become. When it was saved from closure i assumed that it would stay open in it's previous form. I don't know why they bothered.

Fairly good service on the counter. I've never had any reason to complain.
