In West London, Putney is one of the main neighbourhoods within the London Borough of Wandsworth. Putney is situated on the south bank of the River Thames, directly opposite Fulham.
One of the most famous aspects of Putney is its rowing heritage. Back in the 19th century, many of the local oarsmen found that rowing in the main part of the Thames was simply too dangerous and they, therefore, travelled out to the western region of Putney. A new railway linking Putney to Central London also allowed those working in the City to live in Putney and travel to work.
Today, Putney has hardly changed and is still a popular commuter area with visitors flooding to the area during the annual university boat race when accommodation is exceptionally thin on the ground! |
