Having read a couple of the reviews above, I think they paint an unfair picture of the restaurant. They certainly don't open for breakfast, so that particular person has certainly confused the restaurant with somewhere else. On the occasions I have visited, the staff service has always been attentive and very friendly and the food/cocktails certainly cannot be faulted. There is a superb range of authentic Mexican dishes as well as Tex Mex. The only thing that lets the place down is the owners taste in decor which is a little on the tacky side.

It's never going to be a sophisticated dining experience, but if you are looking for a nice friendly atmosphere, with good home-style cooking, then this is the place to go.

Worst service I have ever experienced. The staff are imbeciles and with attitude as well. They gave our drinks to somebody else by mistake, then retrieved them and bought the half empty drinks to us expecting us to accept them. 35 minutes for a drink to be bought to our table and 1 and a half hours for the meal to arrive! CRAP.

Living close to Church street we frequent Mercado often dragging non stokey residents for great nights out. They have an amazing mushroom fajita with a green spinach and cheese sauce that should not be missed. Also the corn mexican style (cheese, chilli, lime) is stunning and easily washed down with the house margaritas. A great place to just grab a drink on a friday or saturday night too, although not a lot of seating. Decor is bright and evokes memories of Mexico for those who have visited, those less travelled may find it over the top, but trust me the food is amazing.

Saw a previous review noting someone having a horrible breakfast. I have never seen Mercado open for breakfast and their menu is not suited for it. I think they have confused the name of the place they went.

We were given breakfast menus (£5 & up) & one of our party asked what was the £4.35 breakfast advertised on the board outside. The waiter went away & came back with a chef type who asked, 'What's the problem?'. The question was repeated & he said, 'That's a mistake.'

Food when it came was not large and lukewarm; functional at best. We observed the two tables behind us sending their food back. One couple sent theirs back a second time ("It's not my fault," the waitress failed to apologise, "This is how i get it from the kitchen.") and left.

Very hard to attract waiter attention to order a drink.

Three of our six developed stomach cramps & diarrhea.
