I live just off Brick Lane and love going for curries there. Last night decided to try Chutneys for the first time and surprise, surprise, regretted it. We were lured in by an offer of 30% off the bill, free drinks etc. The service was abrupt and we were sneered at quite openly. We did get a bottle of wine on the house, but the food was wheeled out in front of us, sent back by a more senior waiter, brought back out (warm but not hot by this point) with just a dash of cream added onto it. It wasn't good, hardly any meat in either of the dishes, bland sauce and not hot enough. The bill couldn't have been brought to us sooner by our charming waiter, and they definitely didn't match the 30% off the bill - the discount was a lot less. So by all accounts, one to steer well clear of.

My girlfriend and I are Indian addicts. We have been to dozens of Indian restauarants across London and I can safely say that this is the worst. I ordered lamb with coconut and chilli. The lamb was grey in colour leading me to question whether it was in fact lamb, whilst the curry itself was watery and tasteless. Staff were rude and as with other reviews, they attempted to play games with the bill and became irate when we questioned it. £35 for bad service and horrendous food is not what Brick Lane is about. Avoid at all costs.

I have 3 main problems with this place (amongst a multitude of smaller ones);
1) The guy they employ on the street is, even by brick lane standards, way too pushy and wouldn't leave us alone. It's almost as if he thought we cared what he had to say.
2) The food was something I wouldn't have wished on my worst enemy. The sauce tasted like it came out of a Tesco economy tin and I think my 'chicken' was actually plasticine.
3) They tried to screw us on the bill. When we queried it, he couldnt work it out himself. Then he muttered something under his breath (which stank) and then got it wrong again.
Im never going back and I would advise you to do the same.

We were practically forced in to Chutneys by some very agressive hard selling on the street and were told "free drink and 30% off the bill because then you will tell your friends how great our restaurant is". The food was poor, it tasted like poor quality meat with a tin of curry sauce poored over the top. The bill came- 20% off some of the food and no free drinks. The waitor seemed very annoyed when we queried the bill. This is not the kind of experience I look for in a curry night and as a result would highly recommend that if you are looking for a good curry on Brick Lane you walk straight past this one (if you can get away from the incredibly agressive and persistant man outside).

Hmmmm. OK, before visiting this place I thought you couldn't go wrong with a curry on Brick Lane. After being enticed into Chutneys on a promise of free drinks and 25% off the food, we were squished into a corner at the back and we waited. And waited. The food took an hour and a half to come (after waiting half an hour to order), was pretty much cold when it turned up, and some of the dishes we'd ordered were missing. The waiter was completely inept, and rude with it. In fairness the manager did bung us a bottle of wine and a couple of extra beers by way of an apology saying "it was a very busy night", but maybe they should have stopped dragging punters off the street if they couldn't c
