Sutton has only been part of Greater London since 1965, however its high street is one of the most important retail areas in South West London. Sutton itself developed in the Victorian era, as the village was on the route between London and Brighton, meaning many travellers and merchants would stop off at one of the coaching inns. Sadly few buildings from this period remain on the high street, as many were demolished to make way for modern constructions. A market takes place every day of the week, with groceries, clothing and other items on offer. You will also find the usual high street clothes stores, phone shops, supermarkets, banks, pubs, eateries and the added bonus of public toilets. If you can’t find what you want here the St. Nicholas Shopping Centre is on the road parallel to the high street, and contains large department stores such as Debenhams and perennial favourite Primark. The high street was renovated in 2010, with new paving, a revamped square and the addition of wooden sculptures, however residents initially complained the so-called improvements made the high street look shoddy. Little known fact: an episode of Mr Bean (the one where he tests everything he wants to buy, including a toothbrush) was filmed at the Allders department store, now a Waterstones.
