London women are set to enjoy a new way of playing tennis this summer with the launch of Tennis Tuesdays – a new campaign from the Lawn Tennis Association and Nike, offering exclusive female only tennis events across the capital.

Tennis Tuesdays aims to inspire more women across the capital to pick up a racket and hit their local court which will be offering fun, social tennis sessions for women across London.

From Tuesday 13th May, participating Tennis Tuesdays venues will provide female-only Tuesday evening tennis, offering informal coaching, weekly themed sessions and fun match play to showcase tennis as a great way to socialise with friends, keep fit and de-stress.

Recent analysis of Sport England’s Active People 7 Survey by the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) found that 1.8 million fewer women than men participate in three sessions of physical activity each week. WSFF research suggests that increasing pressures on women are often the reason for this – juggling work, family and a social life often means that physical activity is the first thing to be cancelled as pressure mounts.

Tennis Tuesdays aims to inspire women into more regular exercise and show how tennis can be a great sport that is sociable, fun, accessible to all abilities, and an excellent way to keep fit - without the monotony of the gym!

Over 14 park venues will be hosting Tennis Tuesday events across London, starting in Southwark, Richmond and Wandsworth and then from June across Kensington, Haringey, Hackney, Westminster, and Merton.

Claire Webb, the Lawn Tennis Association’s Product Manager said:
“We’re hugely excited about the launch of Tennis Tuesday’s in London. We hope that the campaign inspires women across the capital to pick up a racket and head down to their local courts more often. Tennis Tuesdays is about making tennis feel more accessible to women by giving them the chance to enjoy playing tennis in a fun and informal environment with women like them. Tennis is a fantastic way to unwind, de-stress and most importantly stay fit and healthy. Modern pressures can often mean physical activity sometimes takes a back seat – and we want to show how tennis can fit into modern hectic lifestyles and be enjoyed by anyone, of any ability. We are looking forward to people trying out Tennis Tuesdays for the first time this summer, and aim to roll it out to more cities next year”

The campaign will last over a 19 week period and will act as a pilot for running the campaign nationwide in 2015.
