Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellow Dr Richard Barnett leads a walking tour, In Sickness and in Health: Medicine for the Poor in Bloomsbury’s Golden Age. Beginning at Russell Square and ending at the Wellcome Collection, the tour takes in thirteen stops, including an underground smallpox hospital, the open sewers and healing springs of old St Pancras and Finsbury Health Centre, a pioneering experiment in social medicine. Discover how the elegant Bloomsbury of today was once crammed with slums and Dickensian dust-heaps, before becoming a crucible of medical reform.
