The story of young married couple Connor Ludlow (James McAvoy), who works in a restaurant and his wife Eleanor Rigby (Jessica Chastain), who has returned to college to further her education. During the course of their daily lives in New York City, the couple encounters a life changing event that threatens the stability of their marriage.
