Everyday objects and views – from reflections in water to glimpses from windows – are explored in this solo exhibition by Carol Wilhide. Through the medium of linocut or woodcut, brief impressions of nature take on new layers of meaning. An empty nest resonates with loss; tree branches describe an uneasy calligraphy.

Impressions captures the moment when the fleeting image is transformed and reinterpreted by the process of printmaking. From the subtle and nuanced alliance of woodcut and watercolour to the embossed tactility of linocut, these prints anchor movement in stillness and give transience weight.

Carol Wilhide is a London-based artist who has exhibited her work in London, Paris and Tokyo. Her linocut ‘Nest’ was shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2014. She is a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers and won the Matthew White Ridley Printmaking Prize at their show at the Menier Gallery, Southwark in 2013. Earlier this year she spent five weeks in Japan on a residency learning the mokuhanga technique.
