Public trust in 'big data' is a critical part of the current drive to improve population health and healthcare by linking large amounts of electronic health records from different sources.

The Farr Institute has been set up to undertake research using linked data and is holding a public engagement SoundBoard. This event will be an opportunity for you to understand more about the Institute and the research we conduct. The event will also inspire discussion and debate about our research and planned projects that we wish to undertake. We want to understand the views of the public and patients so that this can inform our research and the way in which we undertake it. The event will be chaired by Judith Hann (she is one of Britain’s leading science broadcasters and writers. For 20 years she presented the BBC’s popular science programme Tomorrow’s World)

Come and join us and be our sounding board and engage in lively discussion and debate about big data and health research.

Presentations, discussion and debate will be followed by drinks and nibbles


Background:

The Farr Institute of Health Informatics Research has 4 centres across the UK, in Scotland, Manchester, Wales and London.

Working with public and patients, we conduct research using health records from across the NHS, including primary care, hospitals and other sources.

Our goals are to use these records:

to discover why diseases occur and progress
to trial new interventions to improve health outcomes
to better understand quality of care and outcomes
to inform public health policy.

We are carrying out research using health records across major conditions which affect human health. One of the commitments of the Institute is to do our research with patients and the public, in an open and transparent way. To fulfil this we have decided to hold our first SoundBoard which will focus upon the Maternal and Child Health Theme and its research.
