Contemporary Rites

As part of its Emerging Practices programme Iniva presents Contemporary Rites; a three week series of live art performances taking place in the Education Space from 6- 20 November, where 11 artists and curators will consider the role of ritual in contemporary performance and live art.

The act of ritual is explored from the viewpoint of three distinct rites; rites of passage, communal rites and rites of personal devotion in contemporary living.

Each event is followed by a post-performance open forum attended by the artists and the public to promote dialogue around each piece experienced.

Thursday 6 November, 6.30-8.30pm: The Office of Public Ritual (Jack Tan).The OPR is a service that creates bespoke rituals for significant occasions or life events. Iniva has commissioned a ritual performance from OPR for public presentation.

Saturday 8 November, 3-5pm: Nail'd It (Dunya Kalantery & Angelica Sule) and GET REAL WITH RHODA (Rhoda Boateng). Performances that consider the corporeal and projected notions of rituals in the performance of everyday life.

Thursday 13 November, 6.30-8.30pm: Ephemeral Embodiment (Raju Rage), PREFORM Edition: Feelin' Reflective (Evan Ifekoya) and Your Threads Cut My Fingers (Raisa Kabir) Three performances that explore the complexities of identity in contemporary artistic practice.

Saturday 15 November, 3-4.30pm: Reflections on contemporary performance, Collective Creativity in conversation with curator Amanprit Sandhu. A panel conversation exploring performance with artists who explore ritual, gender, sexul and identity politics.

Thursday 20 November, 6.30-8.30pm: Spit Kit (Ria Hartley), Communion (Jade Montserrat) and Snakes and Sharks and Eels and Bombs and Ladders (Season Butler). A series of performances that explore different positions on the body as site for the articulation of identity through ritual practice.
