Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) 250th anniversary concert, performed by Morley Chamber Orchestra and Conducted by Charles Peebles.

Repertoire:
- Overture Le temple de la gloire
- Suite from Les Boreades

December’s concert continues the Morley tradition of performing some of the lesser-known music from the Baroque period. Rameau is a key figure in this period of music history, and although French Baroque music has received increased attention in recent years his music is still not performed as often as that of his German contemporaries. He first came to fame as a music theorist with the publication of his Treatise on Harmony in 1722. His operas came later and established him as a revolutionary and forward thinking composer. He had fallen out of fashion by the end of the 18th century but has enjoyed a great revival in interest in recent years. Le temple de la gloire is an opera-ballet first performed in Versailles in 1745 while Les Boreades is a late work that remained unperformed in Rameau’s lifetime.
