Dating as far back as the prehistoric era, records and artefacts show that in every culture people have been preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time.
From sundials to water clocks, over the past few millennia there have been a wide variety of ways devised to mark the passage of time and broadly speaking all clocks must have two basic components;
- A regular, constant or repetitive process to mark off equal increments of time.
- A means of keeping track of the increments of time and displaying the result.
Aside from the screens on our smartphones, our regular means of tracking time includes the position of clock hands and a time display and for the month of March we have invited 15 artists to customise clocks for us to display throughout the gallery.
While we’re not expecting any sundials or customised candles marked with increments we do look forward to being visually treated to some functional eye candy that we’re sure will find new homes to both fans and collectors.
