Musical of the Year is the story of a composer’s 60-year attempt to write the ultimate award-winning musical. A lovingly irreverent tribute to the musicals we have known and loved for generations.
It’s 1958 and college sweethearts Rudy Brown and Lizzy Conlon embark on writing the ultimate award-winning musical. Year after year they set out to “improve” their work by emulating whatever has most recently won Broadway’s Musical of the Year. Thus they begin a 60-year process of adapting their work (based on a certain 19th century French novel), purloining the musical styles of Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Kander & Ebb, Jerry Herman, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Schwartz, Boublil & Schonberg and virtually every other composer in the musical theatre canon. Will they ever win the award? Will their relationship survive?
