Since the sixteenth century composers have been inspired by the emotionally charged atmosphere of the three great days of Holy Week. This concert presents some of the most exquisite music of the Triduum representing the agony and ecstasy of Holy Week and Easter: one of the richest sources of inspiration for many of Europe’s Renaissance composers.
As the tension mounted in the approach to the crucifixion and resurrection, the music accompanying the liturgy would become more emotional and highly wrought. The greatest drama was found in the candlelit service of Tenebrae held at sunset; the shadows lengthening as the candles were extinguished one by one.
Programme includes:
The Tallis Lamentations
Three Lenten Responds: In Jejunio et Fletu, Derelinquit Impius, and Emendemus in Melius by Thomas Tallis & William Byrd
O Domine Jesu: Guerrero
