'Remembering the North' at The National Maritime Museum

Following The Arctic Circle, an expeditionary residency onboard a tall ship in Svalbard, Norway in 2014, visual artist Tamsin Relly has been invited by RE·THINK: Environment to take part in a two-week long residency at the National Maritime Museum. During this time she will have the opportunity to reflect on her journey to the North whilst drawing on the polar archives of the museum.

Through this residential project, titled Remembering the North, the artist invites the public into a temporary studio space at the museum to consider the interdependence between our day-to-day contemporary lives and lifestyles and the environmental vulnerability of the polar region. Interested in taking processes that are typically studio bound into the field, Tamsin will continue her investigation of making work in changeable environments: in the studio, at sea, or in a museum.

Between 2 and 4pm each day, visitors are invited to drop in for afternoon cake and tea - a daily ritual of life onboard the ship - where they can hear about Tamsin’s adventures in the Arctic Circle and try out some of the printing processes she explored whilst at sea and back in the studio.
