'Renaissance’
Echoes of the past in music of the present
Rory McCleery, Conductor
Join us for our 2015 Gala concert, where we are thrilled to welcome internationally renowned vocal ensemble, the Marian Consort. The group perform works by contemporary British composers influenced by the music of the Renaissance: from the austere beauty of Lennox Berkeley’s Mass for 5 voices, to Gabriel Jackson’s alternatim Magnificat setting for Truro Cathedral, these are pieces conceived as part of the liturgy of today, but capturing the essence of the past. The Marian Consort are also joined by Oxford Youth Choir for the second performance of Emily Levy’s In Paradisum, written for The Marian Consort, SATB choir and children’s chorus, which sets portions of the Latin Requiem rite juxtaposed with poetry by Andre Dubus on the themes of loss, hope and consolation.
