Ovation: Howling, Ghost Culture, Solar

There are a small handful of artists that we count as part of the family at Oval Space. Two such artists are Ry Cuming and Frank Wiedemann, who have played here no less than five times each. Separately, Ry has played here recently both as one third of The Acid and flying solo as Ry X, while Frank is an Oval Space Music regular as one half of Ame. Together, they form the power couple that is Howling. We were lucky enough to have them back in 2013 for a rare live show and a Boiler Room terrace set so it gives us great pleasure to be able to support them around the release of their anticipated debut album Sacred Ground.

For the uninitiated, Sacred Ground stands for many things at once: collaboration, improvisation, simplicity, unexpected happenstance. The original track "Howling" exploded virally in early 2012 (via Dixon’s Boiler Room set), though hardly past demo stage at the time, and proceeded to climb charts and win awards throughout electronic music. Ry and Frank never saw it coming.

Nor did they expect that a few years later, despite being from two different sonic universes and living on two different sides of the world, their debut album would be pressed in Berlin. Sacred Ground will be released in May 2015 as a collaboration between Modeselektor’s archetypal Berlin label Monkeytown and Counter, an imprint of Ninja Tune. Newly announced as support is bedroom producer turned Phantasy prodigy, Ghost Culture, whose eponymous debut album released earlier this year received rave reviews from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork and The Quietus. Rounding up the bill is US DJ Solar.
