Svendsen: Carnival in Paris
Elgar: Introduction and Allegro for Strings
Holst: A Somerset Rhapsody
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor

Philip Gibson – conductor

For the final concert of Trinity Orchestra’s 2014/15 season we present a delightfully varied programme under guest conductor Philip Gibson.

Getting the evening off to a rousing start will be a little-known but joyful, festive work – Carnival in Paris by Johan Svendsen, a Norwegian composer and friend of Wagner.

Trinity Orchestra’s string section will then be showcased in Elgar’s impressive and highly original Introduction and Allegro for Strings. Composed for the strings of the fledgling London Symphony Orchestra, Elgar divides the players into two groups and then plays the sound of these groups off against each other to great effect.

Staying with British composers, Holst’s Somerset Rhapsody contains several folk-tunes and was one of the composer’s first big successes. The work has a haunting, lyrical quality, evoking the peaceful English countryside.

Finally, we present Tchaikovsky’s turbulent Symphony No 4. Written at a difficult and emotional time in the composer’s life, the work opens with an ominous ‘Fate’ motif, which returns throughout the symphony. Its more optimistic last movement – reminding mankind to rejoice in the happiness of others – will close the concert in a blaze of celebration.

Join us for a pre-concert talk at 7pm through which you can learn more about the evening’s music.
