Mendelssohn: Ruy Blas Overture
Elgar: Froissart Overture
Neruda: Trumpet Concerto
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5, Reformation

Andrew Morley – conductor
Cameron Johnson – trumpet soloist

We’re delighted to welcome back conductor Andrew Morley for the first concert of our 2015/16 season, starring the outstanding young trumpeter Cameron Johnson in Neruda’s concerto. If you like Haydn’s trumpet concerto then you’ll like this one in a slightly earlier style.

Of Jewish heritage, Mendelssohn was raised as a Protestant. He composed the 5th Symphony for the 300th anniversary of the Lutheran faith and included Luther’s great hymn ‘Ein feste Burg’ in this majestic work.

His Ruy Blas Overture is one of his most popular works. It was commissioned to introduce a play by Victor Hugo about love, revenge and death, though it ends on a heroic note.

To help start the evening there’s another concert overture from Elgar in which he chose to portray mediaeval chivalry, with echoes of Wagner’s Mastersingers.

Join us for a free pre-concert talk at 7pm to learn more about the music.
