Isabel Raphael (Mrs, MA Cantab, Headmistress of Channing School 1984 - 1998
After a lifetime of teaching in schools, Isabel Raphael has discovered the joys of adult education. She runs reading groups in Latin and Greek and gives regular seminars and talks on a variety of literary and classical subjects. (Mills & Boon in the Ancient World, The Emperor who retired to plant cabbages, Fables from Aesop to Orwell, etc)
Last year she addressed the Betjeman Society on Literary Highgate, where she had become the first woman President of the Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution (founded 1839).
This has led to Literary Hammersmith, an area she became interested in while living on the Hammersmith/Chiswick border from 1971 to 1984. Mining this part of London has revealed a horde of fascinating people!
