Although there is no evidence that they met, the careers of contemporaries Sigmund Freud and Aurel Stein offer intriguing parallels. Both were fascinated by the ancient world. Stein became a famous archaeologist while Freud was gripped by the extent to which archaeology provided a metaphor for psychoanalysis. Both were close to their dogs. And both were and remain controversial figures. This lecture by Professor Craig Clunas considers what links as well as what separates them today.
